Title A name given to the resource The structure of EMDR therapy: A guide for the therapist Description An account of the resource Since the introduction of EMD by Dr. Shapiro in 1987, which led to the development of EMDR Therapy, clinical experiences and research contributed to a variety of protocols and procedures. While this dynamic evolution within EMDR Therapy is offering more options to treat a variety of patients suffering from various disorders, there is a greater risk of deviations from the core framework of this approach that would no longer be understood as EMDR Therapy. While research shows that following Shapiro’s standard protocols and procedural steps is important to achieve positive treatment effects, it seems prudent to define the core elements in EMDR Therapy beyond adherence to the standard protocol given the complexity of clinical demands in a variety of treatment contexts. The author proposes that best practices requires not only an adherence to the fidelity of the model, but a willingness to adapt the model in order to best meet the needs of our clients in a variety of clinical contexts. Defining the core elements that constitute EMDR Therapy offers both a structure that has been well established and offers a foundation from which clinical adaptations can be made that are within the realm of what is widely accepted as EMDR Therapy. Such a structure could also be used to define research as well as clinical applications. Additionally EMDR Therapy as a comprehensive psychotherapy approach implies that the therapeutic relationship is an important component and should be considered a core element of this methodology. According to Carrere (2013), approximately 150 000 clinicians have been trained in EMDR within the worldwide since 1995. EMDR training as a practitioner is traditionally organized in a two-level model, which consists of basic training completed in few days of training and supervision training with a minimum period of 20 hours after completion of basic EMDR training (Shapiro 1995). The two components of training do not overlap and there should be a minimum period of 1 year after completing basic training and supervision before seeking EMDR accreditation as a practitioner. This process enables the practitioner to incorporate the theoretical basis of EMDR and use EMDR as a part of comprehensive therapy intervention (Farrell & Keenan 2013). In reality, we see that a variety of internal and external circumstances in the life of practitioners influence the training process which is reflected in shorter or longer pauses during the training. It might be more precise to talk about many individual factors of practitioners that do have significant influence in a formal qualification. In education Sciences, no studies have been developed until then in the application of the EMDR protocols. The purpose of this article is to explain the relevance of the EMDR, in helping the cognitive and emotional remediation of students, vis-à-vis mathematics. Nearly 170 students in Master 1 preparing the "Teacher of schools" competition were asked about their relationship to mathematics. Of those who evoked a traumatic memory in the learning situation of mathematics, forty were selected and divided into two groups, a group benefiting from EMDR treatment. After treatment, a significant decrease in negative emotions with respect to mathematics and an increase in the strength of the sense of personal efficacy was observed in the participants. I investigated recent literature and realised that much had been written about narrative therapy as single approach to therapy within the postmodern paradigm. There was also extensive writing on EMDR and its integrative use with other therapies in assisting people who struggle with upsetting memories of trauma. Since I was unable to find any literature to date on the integrative use of narrative therapy and EMDR, I realized that there was much to be discovered and learned on such an integrative research journey. The client's experiences and descriptions of overwhelming emotional distress (as the problem in her life) during the process of integration was the main focus of this qualitative case study. During our therapy conversations knowledges were gathered and deconstructed. Video or tape recordings, photographs, work with clay, sketches, letters and other documents were useful in keeping track of the research journey. A reflecting team and the participation of the client's boyfriend contributed and enriched both the therapy and research journeys. They will each present how they structured their courses, the setting they taught in and their syllabi. They will discuss what worked and what did not work in their courses and offer suggestions for future courses. Issues that come up in these settings, such as how to structure the practica, teaching abreactions, and issues of dual relationships will be discussed and recommendations for addressing those issues will be offered by the presenters. The pros and cons of teaching EMDR in graduate schools and agency/internships will be discussed. After the initial presentations, the workshop will be open to questions, answers and feedback from the participants. This is a yearly ongoing information gathering session where a lively exchange of ideas will be welcomed. The EMDRIA Criteria for teaching EMDR in these settings will also be distributed and discussed. The teaching of EMDR at a university, agency, or internship site brings advantages and disdvantages. These will be discussed, along with different models of instruction in EMDR in these settings.
