It is particularly useful in treating grief and mourning. Literature findings: EMDR is guided by the Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP), which conceptualizes the effects of traumatic experiences in terms of dysfunctional memory networks in a physiologically-based information processing system. Numerous empirical studies have demonstrated EMDR's efficacy. Discussion: The death of a loved one can be very distressing, with memories and experiences associated with the loss becoming dysfunctionally stored and preventing access to adaptive information, including positive memories of the deceased. EMDR can be utilized to integrate these distressing experiences and facilitate the assimilation and accommodation of the loss and movement through the mourning processes. Conclusion: Applying the eight phases of EMDR to grief and mourning can yield potent clinical results in the aftermath of loss. EMDR can be integrated into treatment of grief and loss through processing a) the past memories that underlie current dysfunction b) present triggers, c) future template for adaptive behavior. Past memories include the moment of realization of the loss (e.g. when the mourner heard the news), but can be past traumas or losses that are complicating the current clinical picture. For example, research has shown attachment issues stemming from early childhood can complicate grief, necessitating the processing of past memories connected to current problems (e.g. hyperactivating or deactivating strategies). Present triggers include the situations, people, and places where symptoms are experiences. For each present trigger, future templates for adaptive behavior are applied. EMDR processing seems to allow the client to experience, express and discharge the pain. This is necessary for the eventual adaptive shifting resulting from the linking in of other networks with positive, adaptive information (e.g. healthy accommodation). A loss can be so distressing that access to memory networks containing positive memories of the loved one are blocked. With processing of distressing moments, experiences, and memories, these memory networks become accessible and play a vital role in accommodation of loss. Memories of the deceased serve as an essential bridge between the world with and the world without the loved one and are the building blocks of adaptive inner representations, continuing bonds, and meaning. This presentation will discuss grief and mourning, the processes the mourner has to go through for adaptive assimilation and accommodation of the loss, factors that can complicate bereavement, and how EMDR can be integrated into an overall treatment plan. A avaliação inicial foi realizada para verificar a pertinência de sua participação, em observação aos cuidados clínicos do EMDR, bem como para estabelecer os objetivos do processo psicoterápico e o levantamento dos alvos a serem trabalhados por meio do plano de tratamento. Como instrumentos foram utilizados Avaliação Clínica Inicial (AI), Hogan Grief Reaction Checklist (HGRC), Escala de Experiência de Dissociação – II (DES-II), Escala Beck de Depressão (BDI), Plano de Tratamento (PTr), Protocolo Básico do EMDR, Prontuários, Avaliação Clínica Final (AF), Diário de Campo e Caderno de Anotações Pessoais. This qualitative research, of an exploratory nature, is configured as a collective instrumental case study. In view of the need to deepen the knowledge about the theme, the research aims to understand the psychotherapeutic process of EMDR with patients who are in love with the death of a loved and contribute to the evaluation and clinical practice of EMDR with enluted . Six participants aged 33 to 52 years volunteered to participate from their own perception that they needed help in relation to the grieving process for loss of loved one for at least two years. The initial evaluation was performed to verify the relevance of its participation, in observation to the clinical care of EMDR, as well as to establish the objectives of the psychotherapeutic process and the survey of the targets to be worked through the plan of Treatment. As instruments were used initial clinical assessment (AI), Hogan Grief Reaction Checklist (HGRC), dissociation experience Scale – II (DES-II), Beck Depression Scale (BDI), treatment plan (PTr), EMDR Basic protocol, medical records, Final Clinical Evaluation (PA), field Diary and personal notes notebook. After the initial evaluation, the complaints were raised with a focus on mourning and for the establishment of an individual PTr, each participant performed between 8 and 10 sessions and, after the end of the intervention, passed the final evaluation. In the first analysis movement, the cases were individually studied. In the second analysis, the study of the multiple set of cases was carried out. The comparisons of the assessments provided by the application of the HGRC, DES-II and BDI were in agreement with the qualitative results observed in all participants and in the reduction of the perturbation of the deadaptive memories, namely: reduction or Remission of several physical symptoms; Relief when perceiving the accommodation of the memory worked; Emergence of positive memories; organization of Memories; Construction of meaning and/or personal growth; Balance between guidance for loss and guidance for restoration; The emergence of an internal representation indicating the development of a continuous bond. In conclusion, the EMDR proved to be adequate as a psychotherapeutic intervention for work with variations in the complicated mourning that comprised this collective instrumental case study. Title A name given to the resource From mourning to meaning: EMDR in grief therapy Description An account of the resource EMDR therapy is helpful in the treatment of grief and mourning. A significant loss (particularly under traumatic circumstances) can disable the ability to cope and compromise the ability to adapt. EMDR therapy can process the trauma of the loss and enable the linking in of adaptive information, ( e.g. positive heartfelt memories), giving the mourner a positive sense of connection. However, the mourner may have negative memories (unresolved trauma, losses, attachment-based memories that underlie response to loss) that can complicate the mourning process and EMDR treatment that need to be identified and reprocessed. This workshop will describe EMDR therapy treatment for grief and mourning, treatment frameworks that guide EMDR treatment, dealing with complications (e.g. mourner may equate losing the pain with losing connection to the deceased), and present videos that illustrate EMDR therapy with traumatic loss.
