This quantitative study assesses the effectiveness of the Immediate Stabilization Procedure (ISP®) training and practicum course by assessing outcome knowledge and self-efficacy scores to administer ISP®, and the degree that participant education, occupational experience, and age predict the outcome results of these constructs. Due to the novelty of ISP®, measures to assess knowledge and self-efficacy have not existed and were therefore needed to be constructed and analyzed [2]. Data collected from 40 mental health practitioners and 40 first responders following the training course were subsequently analyzed to develop the measures and substantiate the effectiveness of training using applicable quantitative assessments. Methods The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Immediate Stabilization Procedure (ISP®) training and practicum course by measuring participants’ outcome results of knowledge and self-efficacy constructs associated with the administration of ISP® and to determine the degree of education, occupational experience, and age predict measured results of these constructs. An equal number of participants from two occupational groups, mental health practitioners (n = 40) and first responders (n = 40), were selected. Each group received the same standard ISP® training and practicum course presentation and format. Two new instruments, ISP-EA and ISPSES were constructed to measure knowledge and self-efficacy constructs, respectively. Prior to (pre-test) and following completion (post-test) of the training course, knowledge and selfefficacy scores were obtained using the ISP-EA-25 and ISP-SES-25. The ISP® training and practicum course served as the intervention for the study. Eligibility of participants required United States based adults (> 18, but < 75 years of age), males and females (biologically assigned at birth), consisting of Mental Health Practitioners who have graduated with a master’s degree in the mental health field and were in active practice pursuing, or already had, professional licensing (psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and social workers) and First Responders (emergency medical technicians/services (EMT/EMS), firefighters, police officers, nurses, and trained disaster responders), who were actively employed in their respective occupations. Rasch Rating Scale Analysis (RSA) method and methodology was used to construct and assess the applicability of the ISP-EA and ISP-SES instruments to measure knowledge and self-efficacy related to ISP® and its administration [3]. Paired-samples t-tests were used to determine if a statistically significant mean difference existed between the initial results and final results for all participants. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine to what degree education, occupational experience, or age predict the ISP-EA and ISP-SES scores Results 1. The optimized subsets of ISP-EA and ISP-SES items produced meaningful, theoretically consistent linear progression of assessment that can confidently be used to assess participant outcome levels of knowledge and self-efficacy following completion of the ISP® training and practicum course 2. A statistically significant mean difference exists between the initial results and final results for all participants, and between the individual groups based on education (mental health practitioners vs first responders). See Figure 1 and 2. 3. None of the three variables (education, experience, or age) were statistically significantly different than 0 (zero) to the model prediction, p > .05. Education (MHP vs FR), experience, or age are variables that are not able to predict ISP® training and practicum effectiveness based on post training results. Conclusions 1. The ISP-EA and ISP-SES measure the constructs they were designed for, knowledge and self-efficacy, respectively. 2. The ISP® training and practicum course is effective as determined by outcome-based measurements of participant knowledge and self-efficacy results. 3. Educational background (mental health practitioner, first responder), occupational experience, or age had no significant effect on predicting outcome-based results implying they are not factors influencing participant knowledge or self-efficacy to effectively be trained in ISP administration. Over the course of time EMD developed into the comprehensive therapy approach named EMDR therapy. The development of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) Model, the model of pathogenesis and change of EMDR therapy, was a milestone in this development from technique to psychotherapy approach. Lately a description of the therapeutic relationship in EMDR therapy has been proposed based on attachment theory. The therapeutic relationship has been described as a core element of EMDR Therapy, and seems to be related to the structure of EMDR Therapy. An internet-based survey of EMDR therapists in several waves was used to evaluate whether EMDR therapists support the above mentioned description of the therapeutic relationship in EMDR therapy. The self-experience of the EMDR therapists in EMDR therapy as elicited in the survey seems to support the description of the therapeutic relationship in EMDR therapy. Even if the survey was only conducted with EMDR therapists, thus limiting the informative value on the patient population in general, it offers valuable insights into the therapeutic relationship in EMDR Therapy. The mechanism called Group Sharing and Case Consultation (GSCC) was developed and implemented by the author in Hong Kong based on successful studies on reflective practices in the helping profession. Informed by the notions of action learning, reflection on action and collaborative peer inquiry, the mechanism has facilitated therapists’ ability to reflect on their own experiences of using EMDR in their practices through sharing and guided reflection by a trainer and peer participants. The framework underpinning GSCC will be examined with illustrative examples. Feedback gauged from clinicians who participated in a series of GSCC sessions will be presented. Results highlight the contribution of this mechanism to therapists’ ability to better reflect on their own practices, and to their enhanced confidence in using EMDR in their practice. References will also be made to the specific issues which participants learned and the different sources of their learning. Results are discussed in light of the growing need to provide ongoing case consultation and supervision to practitioners while undertaking on board the socio-cultural context in which they practice. Aim: We sought to establish the monetary value participants placed on the training and to examine the impact that continuous professional development (CPD) hours and/or academic credit would affect the perceived value reported. Method: As part of the evaluation we asked participants to complete a willingness to pay survey. A questionnaire comprising five questions was developed. These questions asked respondents to state how much of their own money they would be willing to pay toward EMDR therapy training; if training was or was not recognised for CPD, if the course carried academic credit and if their employer subsidized the course. Findings: Twenty-one of the participants responded. The mean amount they stated they were willing to pay was £871.25. If the training did not attract CPD hours the amount that they were willing to pay fell to £544.44, in comparison to £814.71 when CPD was awarded. They were willing to pay a mean of £817.65 when academic credit was attached to the training. Statistically significant differences were evident between willingness to pay when CPD hours were offered and when not and academic credit and no CPD hours. No difference between CPD hours and academic credit was found. Conclusion & Learning: Those commissioning or planning EMDR therapy training for mental health nurses should be aware need for either academic credit or CPD hours to be available for potential trainees. Aim: The purpose of the present study is to show the role of International University of Sarajevo (IUS) as a local private educational institution in educating and training EMDR therapist in B&H. It is proposed that tertiary level research (Doctoral dissertation) can be initiated. Two such Doctoral dissertations have been completed using EMDR as choice of intervention with college students as well as comparative study of EMDR with other Indian approaches of therapy. EMDR as intervention strategy is included in the curriculum of Master’s students, specializing in clinical and counselling psychology. EMDR practitioners not only guide the students in the theoretical and empirical support for the therapy but also share the positive results that they see in their practice resulting in trauma alleviation using EMDR. The university department actively organizes EMDR training from level I to trainer’s training. The rigorous standards and highest quality of training is ensured due to overall academic context in which the trainings take place. Finally the trained clinicians/counsellors are good support system for undertaking large-scale trauma counselling projects. One such example is trauma-counselling work undertaken for the victims of earthquake. Department faculty and students were major stakeholders of this program. This research used a mixed research methodology exploring EMDR training participants' application of EMDR within their current clinical practice. The rationale was to explore potential differences between EMDR-accredited and EMDR-nonaccredited clinicians in relation to retrospective reports of treatment. Results indicate that EMDR-accredited clinicians report better treatment outcomes. An argument is presented that EMDR has progressed from a convergent technique to a divergent psychotherapeutic approach. Consequently, the research explored whether current EMDR training is “fit for purpose.“ A comprehensive model for EMDR training is outlined, proposing the importance of developing more EMDR training in academic institutions. Many of the children in their early childhood repeatedly exposed to traumatic experiences, are from their homes. The effects of trauma are usually severe and largely because the organization of the developing brains negative influences. For repair of complex trauma trauma-focused individual therapy is not enough. Children have lots of new (healing) experience needed to regain confidence in themselves, others and the world around them. The home must establish best opportunities provided educators tightly to vote on what the child needs. The training 'Caring for traumatized children "provides educators and counselors indispensable information about the effects of trauma on the daily functioning of their child and the relationship which they consider important to their adult child development. (Foster-) parents and other significant adults in the life of the child can therefore do more to restore their child and become less exhausted, the chance of (still) a placement reduces. The training is based on recent scientific insights in a clear and concrete way to digest in PowerPoint slides, case studies and exercises. The primary areas under investigation were factors contributing to attrition and retention, as well as the quest to obtain information pertaining to training experiences. A sample of 239 clinicians was purposefully obtained. Several patterns emerged within the data, highlighting the issues of attrition: Loyalty to other treatment modalities and discomfort with using EMDR, either through lack of confidence, inadequate training, or discomfort with client distress, were both correlated with clinician attrition. Treatment efficacy and ongoing consultation were remarkable for retention. Practice setting surfaced as statistically significant, and operating in private practice was positively correlated with greater participation in EMDR support activities. Additionally, the adequacy of the training format was presented, as well as how prepared the participants felt after completion of EMDR training. A number of findings were consistent with earlier studies and the converging results of loyalty to previous modalities and discomfort using EMDR gave rise to recommendations for future training and support of newly trained clinicians. The limitations of the current study were presented, in addition to directions for future research. These qualities, as defined by former clients, include therapist personality, an ability to empower clients, flexibility, intuition, a sense of ease and comfort in working with trauma, and a commitment to the small measures of caring that clients identify as helping them feel safer. This article highlights the importance of honoring client safety in EMDR treatment by further exploring a theme from a phenomenological parent study on the use of EMDR with women in addiction continuing care. The parent study offered qualitative evidence showing that there is a place for EMDR as part of a comprehensive women’s addiction recovery program when applied properly. In this article, participants’ descriptions of their EMDR therapists and how these therapists were able to establish safety are described in greater detail than the parent study article allowed. Implications for emphasis on client-centered factors in the training and formation of EMDR therapists are discussed using the data extrapolated from the clients’ experiences, and further directions for researching the clientcentered perspective in EMDR are presented. It outlines in particular an EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Training Programme that took place in Abbotabad and Rawalpindi in response to the Pakistan earthquake, 2005, in helping to train teams of mental health workers in EMDR so as to enable them to treat psychological trauma symptoms of earthquake survivors. Implementing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) into the treatment process offers a potential solution to this problem. Ten women (alumnae of an extended-care treatment facility) participated in a semistandardized interview to share their experiences with active addiction, treatment, EMDR therapy, and recovery. With the use of A. P. Giorgi's descriptive phenomenological psychological method for analysis, four major thematic areas emerged from the interview data: the existence of safety as an essential crucible of the EMDR experience, the importance of accessing the emotional core as vital to the recovery experience, the role of perspective shift in lifestyle change, and the use of a combination of factors for successful treatment. All 10 women, to some degree, credited EMDR treatment as a crucial component of their addiction continuing-care processes, especially in helping with emotional core access and perspective shift. Since 2001, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is considerable pressure on military medicine to effectively manage the growing demand for mental health of deployed personnel. This article examines the capacity of the Ministry of Defence of the United States to provide mental health services quality depending on availability (a) of clinical training, (b) mental health interventions and (c) sponsored research into the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. While significant progress has been achieved in access to cognitive behavioral treatment and studies in this field, neuro-emotional integration by alternating bilateral stimulation or EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing &) is much less available - perhaps because of the current controversy surrounding the art. This begins with students who are planning on pursuing a career in the health or mental health field. Courses of study do not adequately present material to students regarding trauma and treatment options. Thus, students leave their educational settings lacking knowledge about what EMDR is. This workshop is focused on both undergraduate and graduate educators who work in colleges and universities in the health care and mental health curriculum. Because students lack knowledge about trauma treatment, it could be years before they discover EMDR in their professional life. A panel discussion will provide the following learning objectives: Identify content areas to include when defining trauma; Define EMDR and summarize how it is used as a treatment option for trauma; Identify the challenges and possible solutions within colleges and university settings to include content on trauma and EMDR; and Create a template for content to include in a current course and strategies to market it to colleges in the health and mental health curriculum. The research group was drawn from both the membership of the EMDR UK and I Approved Commercial Training. The research ascertained participant’s core profession, main psychological treatment orientation, present utilization of EMDR within current clinical practice, number of clients treated, types of referral issues, average number of sessions, and provision for clinical supervision. Participants were then asked to provide feedback as to their views on their EMDR training experience. Results demonstrated a significant proportion of practitioners integrated EMDR with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy more than any other paradigm. EMDR trainings were criticised in areas which included participant involvement, post training, professional development, and systems of assessment of knowledge and application of EMDR. In response to that need, a training program for one of the psychotherapies, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), was implemented utilizing personnel from these federal departments with assistance from a nonprofit agency. This article presents an evaluation of that program with rating data gathered from participants as well as treatment outcome data from the application of the training to patients. The program was highly rated by the participants and the impact of EMDR treatment was significant. Suggestions for similar programs and for further research are offered. First of all, let me say that I sympathize with his travel problem. The Australians called it the "tyranny of distance." Therefore, after a half dozen clinicians flew into the US to be trained, they coordinated a series of workshops in Australia later that year. During that first trip to Australia we trained almost 500 clinicians in EMDR, and another 350 clinicians six months later. The simple message here is "coordinate it and we will come." The larger issue, however, remains client safety and the consequent need for quality control. Lerner stirred an audience of 2,500 therapists with his impassioned appeal for the mental health community to mobilize politically, yet 1 was struck by an important omission in his address there was little mention of our own individual and collective responsibility for the current crises feeing our profession. I don't think therapists can take the moral high ground with anyone when we haven't cleaned up our own house. I remember hearing about a conversation in which a therapist who said he did family therapy was asked where he was trained. "What's the big deal?' he replied. "I'm a therapist and 1 was born into a family. What more do I need?" I asked the person who told the story, "How did you respond to that?" She shrugged and said, "Nothing. You know how people are. It goes on all the time." In a field that prides itself on its mavericks and creative innovators, from Freud to Milton Erickson, doing therapy without training is often viewed as an indicator of a willingness to reject stultifying orthodoxies and break with outmoded clinical traditions. But the argument that individual clinicians need the autonomy to work intuitively can often become an excuse for not bothering to become thoroughly prepared and knowledgeable about what has already been developed. As the originator of a new therapeutic approach called Eye Movement De-sensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), I have had the opportunity to get a close-up view of how therapists incorporate new clinical methods into their practices. After publishing a controlled study on EMDR in 1989, I decided to teach it to licensed mental health professionals as an experimental procedure. This way, as we awaited further research, clinicians could use EMDR judiciously, careful to employ other procedures if the method did not work. However, I soon began getting reports about clients who appeared to be harmed by EMDR and discovered that they had been treated with improvised versions of the method taught to their therapists by past participants in EMDR trainings. Some participants had even trained lay hypnotists and massage therapists in their version of EMDR. There seemed to be little understanding that you are not qualified to teach something you just learned. My psychiatrist friends laughed at my shock and said, "Why are you surprised? Haven't you heard of 'See one, do one, teach one?" Advertisements for "eye movement therapy" started appearing around the country taught by people who had never been fully trained themselves. Some even started to run workshops based on their reading of the two-page procedure section of my eight-year-old research publication. The intentions of these therapists may have been benign, but the consequences for their clients were sometimes disastrous. One young woman who had been raped was treated by a therapist who had heard that EMDR was useful for treating trauma. Without any other information, preparation or procedural safeguards, the therapist started using the eye movement component of EMDR, without any real grasp of the method. The young woman appeared to calm slightly, but when she returned home, she started crying uncontrollably, ended up in a fugue state and had to be hospitalized. When I told the story to another therapist, his response was, "Clients do that all the time. How do you know it wouldn't have happened anyway?" The answer is I don't, but I know that there is much less likelihood of a client being hurt if clinicians are well trained in their methods. As long as we shrug off the use of methods by colleagues who haven't been adequately trained in them, we have to accept part of the responsibility for their results. Cautions Training
