Violent children must self-organize to meet the internal and external demands of having to co-exist with daily reminders of their trauma. They carry truncated defenses, internalization of wounding attachment figures, trauma bonds and shame which lay at the core of their challenges. Dysregulation, emotional constriction and dissociation become part of their inner everyday reality. Aggression directed toward others as well as self-attacks, self-betrayal and shame are often present in severely traumatized children, constituting one of the biggest challenges for EMDR therapists. The presence of perpetrator-imitating parts that hold a strong attachment to wounding figures is at the core of the major conflicts inside the dissociative system and with-it incidents of self-harm or violent acts towards others. This keynote presentation will support clinicians in understanding the origins of aggression in children within the context of complex trauma and dissociation as well as providing a framework to conceptualize and work with self- and other-directed aggression and hostility in children within the eight phases of EMDR therapy. Many idealize or fixate on "positive moments" and minimize persistent threats and episodic violence. Some have learned to associate control and jealousy with love: "My partner does that because he/she loves me so much." Many victims feel guilty when their partner is imprisoned and forget quickly about the risks. They frequently drop charges and go back to their abusive relationships. In this way, idealization and maladaptive positive emotion are serious, potentially life threatening issues in IPV that can be understood from the AIP model. The concept of dysfunctionally stored information (DSI) described in the AIP model can be viewed as being broader in nature than memories for adverse experiences and can include dysfunctional defenses such as maladaptive positive emotion. When dealing with IPV, idealized memories of "best moments" can be more challenging to resolve than specific traumatic experiences, such as in cases where the victim is unable to realize the danger of the situation and clings to a few idealized positive moments. Identifying and understanding these aspects as dysfunctionally stored information can broaden the scope of possible targets. This can be essential in the case conceptualization of complex trauma cases. It will argue that the effects of trauma can contribute to engagement in problematic behaviours (such as offending behaviour, substance misuse and aggression) which may require those coming into contact with the Criminal Justice System to attend treatment programmes to target these problem behaviours. Mainly from clinical practice, there are indications that EMDR can reduce excessive needs for alcohol, gambling, shopping, sex or food. The positive feelings that are connected to the problematic behaviour decrease and make it easier to control unwanted impulses. From a forensic point of view, it is interesting to explore whether EMDR can be applied in the treatment of deviant sexual arousal. Exhibitionists, for instance, often describe a strong urge that they can hardly resist. Results from a pilot study will be presented, in which four EMDR sessions, according to the addiction protocol by Hornsveld and Markus (2014), were given to eight participants seeking help for the urge to expose their genitals. This workshop will help the EMDR clinician better understand the importance of social identity and culture, learn to spot the effects of internalized oppression, and strategically transform the impact of prejudice and discrimination. Content will include a culturally aware psycho-social history, expanded negative and positive cognitions, techniques for social identity resource enhancement, strategic target selection for desensitization and a protocol for dismantling prejudice. Culturally influenced social identities are important dimensions of how people know themselves and experience meaning in the world. For some, their social identities, whether chosen or assigned by circumstances, have been a "reason" they have been the victim of episodic mistreatment or chronic discrimination. Research supports common sense observations that stigmatized people report overall lower life satisfaction and widely documents the dynamics and impact of internalized oppression and prejudice. The many “isms” divide people, limit their human potential, and assault their fundamental human dignity in the larger world. Yet, clinicians often ignore these issues in trauma histories and case formulation. Reprocessing culturally connected traumatic events, large and subtle, leads to robust client gains as was supported in the research findings from 60 EMDR therapists who explored these issues in training practicums. The AIP model predicts the profound potential EMDR offers to be a leader in the field of individualized treatment for the impact of social discrimination. Key points will be illuminated with case examples and clinical video. Background: The aim of this current study was to analyze the efficacy of the individual STEPStreatment in reducing symptoms of PTSD, in comparison with an EMDR-treatment for adolescent girls after a single case of sexual assault. The STEP-treatment is a cognitive behavioral treatment, developed by Bicanic and Kremers (2007). It was expected that both treatments would lead to a similar reduction of symptoms of PTSD. Methods: The study is carried out under 47 girls, with 33 girls in the individual STEPS-treatment-group and 14 girls in the EMDR-treatment-group. Their ages lay between 12 and 24 years en they all experienced a single case of sexual assault. The symptoms of PTSD are measured with the SLVK and with the subscale ‘Symptoms PTSD’ from the TSCC. Results: The results show that the individual STEPS-treatment as well as the EMDR-treatment lead to a significant reduction of PTSD-symptoms. De difference in reduction between both treatments is not significant. Conclusions: The individual STEPS-treatment and the EMDR-treatment lead to a similar reduction of PTSD-symptoms. Follow-up research with a controlgroup, bigger and more equal research-groups and random assignment to these groups is necessary to gain a more valid and reliable outcome, and to determine the effect of both treatments. The University of Groningen, with co-financing by the Fund Victim, launched an investigation into whether professional help is effective. The study has two objectives: To what extent does a treatment consisting of EMDR and CBT for family members and partners of a murdered person to reducing symptoms of complicated grief. Additionally this study aims to understand the extent to which the effect of the treatment with EMDR and CBT is mediated by a decrease of intrusions, avoidance behavior, extreme anger and dysfunctional cognitions. In addition, 1.8 million women, children and men were raped, many as a social weapon of war. Many of these women still suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mutilated genitals. Objectives: To assess a short-term interventional team for the evaluation and treatment of sexual trauma victims. Methods: The intervention program comprised four components: training the local staff, medical evaluation and treatment of patients, psychological evaluation and treatment of trauma victims, and evacuation and transport of patients with mutilated genitals. A diagnostic tool for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – the Impact Event Scale (IES) – was used. The psychological treatment was based on EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) principles. Using questionnaires, the information was obtained from patients, medical staff and medical records. Results: Three primary care clinics were chosen for intervention. Of the 441 women who attended the clinics over a period of 20 days, 52 women were diagnosed with severe PTSD. Psychological intervention was offered to only 23 women because of transport limitations. The most common medical problems were pelvic inflammatory disease and secondary infertility. Nine patients suffered genital mutilation and were transferred for surgical correction. The 32 local nurses and 2 physicians who participated in the theoretical and practical training course showed improved knowledge as evaluated by a written test. Conclusions: With the short-term interventional team model for sexual assault victims the combined cost of medical and psychological services is low. The emphasis is on training local staff to enhance awareness and providing them with tools to diagnose and treat sexual assault and mutilation. As such, a robust body of literature exists lending insight into risk factors and clinical presentations associated with anger and aggression; however, such factors are multidimensional and complex, particularly for those suffering with war stress injuries. Furthermore, mental health stigma and treatment compliance with exposure and cognitive-based models, particularly in clients with aggressive presentations, can impact successful outcomes. One active-duty marine was referred to an outpatient mental health clinic for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Four sessions of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) were used to significantly reduce obsessive violent impulses, traumatic grief, and depression. The benefit of EMDR therapy as a treatment for violent impulses is explored. The results are promising, but more research is needed. The aim of the work reported here was to examine the effectiveness of Culture-Sensitive and Resource Oriented Peer (CROP) - Groups for Chechen asylum seekers and refugees towards reducing post-traumatic symptoms, anxiety, and depression. Some ninety-four participants were randomly assigned to 15 sessions of CROP - or Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) - Groups, to 3 single sessions of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), or to a Wait-List (WL). The results indicated that CROP was significantly superior to WL, and was equally effective as CBT in reducing post-traumatic symptoms, anxiety, and depression. Improvements still were present at three and six month follow-up occasions. EMDR yielded negative results. According to this pilot study, CROP-Groups pose a promising, culturally sensitive alternative to psychotherapy with Chechen migrants. Studies link extreme neglect and abuse with long-term changes in the nervous and endocrine systems. A growing body of research literature indicates that individuals with severe trauma histories are at higher risk of behaving violently than those without such histories. This article links these two research areas by discussing how severe and protracted child abuse and/or neglect can lead to biological changes, putting these individuals at greater risk for committing homicide and other forms of violence than those without child maltreatment histories. The implications of these biological findings for forensic evaluations are discussed. The idea is that a procession of experiences moves through each nervous system, bringing learnings, changes, and developmental growth. If these experiences are perceived as overwhelming or threatening, a person may deliberately or automatically engage in "neuro-muscular lock", in which experience is arrested and held for later processing. This workshop will examine a model for describing how this may happen, and will also present a model for resolving symptomatic experience.
