Comment on Hembree and Foa (2003) and EMDR

The role of eye movements in EMDR therapy is not yet clear. However, it is clear that Hembree and Foa's uncritical report of evidence nonsupportive of the importance of eye movement, or other sensory/motor activity in EMDR, suggests this is a closed issue, not an open issue as the research actually indicates. This uncritical interpretation by Hembree and Foa poses the danger of unjustly steering scientists and clinicians away from consideration of EMDR as a distinct method of treatment, and of attempting to better understand its mechanism of effect.
