Deze bewering wordt ondersteund door de doeltreffendheid van de directe therapeutische blootstelling (DTE), zoals blijkt uit gecontroleerde studies. Omgekeerd is er aanwijzingen dat andere behandelmethoden die geen gebruik maken van langdurige blootstelling wijzen verschijnt even effectief. Bovendien is de effectiviteit van de DTE bemoeilijkt door zowel psychiatrische complicaties en de beperkte compliance van de patiënt als gevolg van problemen met de blootstelling huiswerkopdrachten. In deze paper wordt geconcludeerd dat de DTE is een levensvatbare behandeling voor PTSS, maar het is twijfelachtig of DTE moet worden beschouwd als de 'voorkeursbehandeling' voor PTSS. Steekwoorden: langdurige blootstelling, PTSS, te herzien. <br /><br />Prolonged exposure to traumatic memories is considered by many as a necessary element in the treatment of posttramatic stress disorder (PTSD). This claim is supported by the effectiveness of direct therapeutic exposure (DTE), as is evident from controlled outcome studies. Conversely, there is evidence to suggest that other treatment approaches that do not use prolonged exposure appear equally effective. Furthermore, the effectiveness of DTE is complicated by both psychiatric complications and limited patient compliance as a result of difficulties with exposure homework assignments. In this paper, it is concluded that DTE is a viable treatment for PTSD, but it is questionable whether DTE should be considered the 'treatment of choice' for PTSD.
