In the eye of the beholder:  Reflections on shame, dissociation, and transference in complex post-traumatic stress and attachment disorders

This workshop will present a comprehensive approach to EMDR case formulation and treatment planning for complex posttraumatic stress disorder in adults based on an integration of affect-script theory (Nathanson, Tomkins), dissociation theory (Janet, Braun, Kluft, Putnam, Ross) and attachment (Bowlby) theory. Attention will be given to-common transference and countertransference challenges which frequently must be addressed in the EMDR treatment of adult survivors of childhood neglect and guidelines to avoid treatment failures and offer a stable treatment environment. Guidelines will be offered for balancing supportive psychotherapy (empathy) and structured EMDR treatment in the psychotherapy of adult survivors of childhood neglect and abuse. Participants will learn specific methods including resource installation and guidelines on integrating the use of metaphor and guided imagery with advanced EMDR skills that will better enable them to help their patients suffering achieve significant therapeutic gains by building missing emotional, cognitive and behavioral resources and skills.
