Theoretical, clinical, research, and ethical constraints of the eye movement desensitization reprocessing technique

Recently a letter by Dr. Corydon Hammond appeared in The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis Newsletter regarding a technique developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro termed Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). The authors report that their clinical experience does not support the claims made by Shapiro of dramatic and long-lasting improvement using the technique.Our experience parallels Dr. Hammond's findings. We recommend extreme caution in embracing, using, or endorsing EMDR.
