The use of EMDR as treatment for chronic PTSD
Description
An Open Trial of EMDR in Patients with Chronic PTSD. Objective and Methods: The effectiveness of EMDR was evaluated in ten patients with chronic PTSD. Psychometric instruments were administered by an independent assessor before and after therapy. Preliminary results. Data is available for 5 subjects (2 males, 3 females; age 40.6 ± 10.8 years). All had CAPS-diagnosed PTSD pretreatment (median number of symptoms, 11.5) and 1 had PTSD posttreatment (median number of symptoms, 3). Baseline/1-week posttreatment differences in SUDS (9/1.3), IES-R intrusion (25/2), avoidance (24/1) and hyperarousal (25/2) subscales, and SCL-90 GSI (1.5/0.1) and PSDI (2.5/1.5) subscales were significant (p less than 0.05). Discussion. EMDR is a robust treatment for PTSD which warrants additional investigation.
