Guideline 8 - Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing
Description
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), an emerging therapy for psychological trauma, has been in use for nearly a decade. Although it has stimulated strong interest and enthusiasm, EMDR has also received intense critical scrutiny. This chapter provides an overview of the history and theory of EMDR. Next, the ENDR procedure is summarized, followed by a review of the outcome literature. Dismantling studies of the contribution of eye movements to the efficacy of the EMDR procedure are then reviewed, followed by an overall rating reflecting the current knowledge of EMDR's efficacy, along with recommendations for its use. The chapter concludes with suggestions for further research.
