EMDR for phobia
Description
Traumatic experiences have been described as a powerful learning experience and therefore an important aetiological factor in certain phobias (Doering et al, 2013). Specific phobias which induce a marked anxiety or sense of panic in individuals affects approximately 10% of the general population. Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT) is often regarded as a treatment of choice in treating specific phobias. De Jongh (19990) considers that specific phobia might benefit from a trauma-focused treatment. This pre-conference workshop will outline how to case conceptualize specific phobias using the Adaptive Information Processing paradigm. It will articulate the importance of target sequencing in working with specific phobias using a case example of an individual who was ‘needle phobic. Each of the eight phases of EMDR will be explored in how each phase relates to working with specific phobia clients.
