안구운동 민감소실 및 재처리 요법에서 중도 탈락한 환자의 특성 Who drops out from eye movement desensitization and reprocessing?: Comparison with treatment completers

Description

Authors found the drop out rate of 40.5% from a series of 42 psychiatric patients who undergone EMDR treatment at a psychiatric unit of university affiliated hospital. Compared with completers (n=27), drop outs were more likely to be less educated (p=.047) and had higher score on trait anxiety (p=.020). Not statistically significant, drop outs scored higher on the obsessive-compulsive scale of SCL- 90-R (p=.055). Drop outs did not differ on other demographic factors (i.e., sex, age, marital status, religion, monthly income, and employment status) and clinical variables (i.e., diagnosis, duration of illness, concurrent medication, add-on status, state anxiety, depressive symptoms, dissociative symptoms, alexithymia, and ego strength). Findings from this study suggest that drop outs from EMDR treatment may have discrepancy in expectation of treatment, poor understanding of treatment process, discomforts during or between sessions, and weak therapeutic alliance. With patients with characteristics described for drop outs in this study, EMDR clinicians may benefit from putting more emphasis and time on education, preparation and more importantly therapeutic alliance before beginning EMDR.
