Embodied culture: A somatic approach to diversity awareness in EMDR

Description

This presentation applies somatic psychotherapy principles to the practice of EMDR when working with culturally different clients. Fifteen researched multicultural competencies will be introduced deepening into nonverbal communications as a form of Embodied Culture. Embodied Culture is defined as the interactions of physiological, emotional, mental, cultural, social, and behavioral factors. Diversity awareness will be integrated into all Phases of EMDR including sensitivity to use of space, eye contact, and posture as related to power and privilege. Participants will practice a self-reflective exercise to increase awareness of one’s body-mind connection as it relates to working with clients who are culturally different.
