Gender trauma: EMDR with transgender and gender nonconforming persons

Description

In the U.S., 41% of transgendered persons have attempted suicide. Those who are nontraditional in gender suffer the insidious, internalized, and potentially fatal effects of prejudice and bigotry. EMDR-based writing and research relative to the transgender and gender nonconforming communities is absent. Attendees will learn a model of gender identity development from a psycho-historical lifespan approach that delineates the realities of trauma amidst developmental stages and tasks. The construction of gender will be delineated via didactic and interactive techniques, including video and norm challenging interactive exercises. Attendees will examine assumptions about gender while learning effective EMDR intervention tools.
