Effective treatment modalities for troops with combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder

Description

This meta-analysis study evaluated 22 research studies on the effectiveness of combat-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder treatment. There has been a great deal of research completed on the individual modalities of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and Cognitive Processing Therapy and how they have been effective on combat-related trauma associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, but there was limited research on efficacy using just these two modalities concerning this particular diagnosis. The studies used in this meta-analysis ranged in date from 1995 to 2013. This assessment of the two research modalities was completed by studying the most current comparison research articles in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each modality. This study focused on research conducted within the Veteran's Health Administration system and other military venues. The methodology that was used in this qualitative meta-analysis study was a way to compare the therapeutic efficacy in existing research on each of the modalities. The NVivo 10 software program was used in the analysis section. While there have been many modality comparison studies that have been completed on variations of the above therapies, no study has compared Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and Cognitive Processing Therapy exclusively. This study showed overall results toward a higher amount of efficacy in the Cognitive Processing Therapy modality over Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing in combat-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
