"The impossible we do every day. Miracles take a bit longer": Consecutive days EMDR at warrior camp®

Description

The presentation will describe consecutive days EMDR treatment of active duty warriors and recent veterans in a weeklong program designed to address Combat-related PTSD. Additional modalities were offered to enhance participants’ capacity to identify and use personal and social resources, increase attachment behaviour, and learn how to truly relax.

Warrior Camp® (WC), a Trademarked program of Trauma and Resiliency Resources, Inc., utilizes EMDR - evidence-based and given an A rating by the U.S. Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration; EAGALA-model Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP); and Yoga. EMDR restores/ facilitates healthy, adaptive integration of traumatic experience as it reduces/eliminates distress and the consequent, disturbing symptoms of unprocessed trauma. Yoga restores/enhances physical and mental balance and EAP addresses attachment disruption and is promising in its potential to heal the moral injury, crises of conscience and spiritual conflicts that often accompany mortal combat.

Screening inventories were administered pre and post treatment, and again at 90-day follow-up. The Pilot program evaluation by Weill Cornell Medical College Department of Public Health will be presented here, as will outcomes of 3 other subsequent WCs.

Attendees will learn how participants were selected, the severity of the traumas processed, what occurred during the EMDR sessions - especially with regard to childhood traumas, what the clinical team observed and learned, and what the participants said worked for them. The presentation will be enriched through film clips of WC activities and individual interviews with staff and warriors.
