EquiLateral: The equine-assisted EMDR protocol. The first EMDR protocol to integrate animal-assisted therapy

Description

EMDR, a comprehensive treatment modality, includes aspects of multiple psychotherapeutic approaches (Shapiro, 2001). EquiLateral™ is the Equine-Assisted EMDR protocol, an integration of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and EMDR that still maintains fidelity to the three-pronged eight-phased standard EMDR protocol.

Alongside EMDR, EAP has become increasingly utilized in trauma recovery, especially in working with the military. With this in mind, equine-based experiential activities, such as those found in EAP, can help to facilitate EMDR while still maintaining treatment fidelity, especially in the treatment of clients with complex trauma. Through EquiLateral practitioners are still doing EMDR, yet also incorporating equine-assisted experiences within the protocol, supporting the client and therapist throughout EMDR’s eight phases.

This workshop will address the clinical rationale for integrating EAP and EMDR. Attendees will be able to identify clients who would benefit from Equine-Assisted EMDR including those in need of additional grounding, attachment, affect tolerance skills, resource states for in depth trauma processing and dual attention, as well as for case conceptualization and target sequence planning purposes.

While clients with complex trauma are provided with a variety of resources EMDR practitioners are also offered a creative, engaging and clinically beneficial approach to EMDR. With this in mind, attendees will be able to identify how the integration of EMDR and EAP through the EquiLateral Equine-Assisted EMDR Protocol creates additional specialization opportunities for the EAP and EMDR practitioner.

A highly interactive and engaging workshop, participants will learn via case studies, video, interactive activities, and didactic presentations.
