Interpersonal violence in SE-Asia and the impact of EMDR - Lessons from the Mekong Project

Description

As a sequel to an earlier project in Aceh/Indonesia (2006-2009) a major humanitarian assistance and training-cum-therapy project (“Mekong Project”) was carried out in 2010 to 2013 in Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia under the aegis of Trauma-Aid (HAP) Germany.

The project focussed on children and women suffering from the consequences of interpersonal violence, domestic or public, and used a variety of EMDR-related techniques both in its training components and in therapy. All therapies were monitored with a variety of diagnostic instruments, questionnaires and detailed case studies. A final evaluation is scheduled for early 2014.
From these data, taken from close to 5000 clients in 3 countries, a detailed picture emerges of the

• Type of Traumatic Events
• Post-Traumatic Social Stressors and Resources
• Relevant demographic and socioeconomic factors
• Initial Diagnostic Screening with HPCL-25, HTQ and CBCL
• Post-Treatment Screening with the same instruments
• Applied therapeutic techniques esp. RTT, stabilization, EMDR protocol, other „confrontational” techniques.

The paper will examine the relationship between these sets of variables and present the major findings on how positive therapeutic change has been shaped by both post-traumatic conditions and a variety of therapeutic strategies adopted by the therapists trained during the life-span of the project.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the impact of recurring negative life events and consequently on both the scope and the limits of psychotherapeutic interventions in a context characterized by ongoing violence and over-stressed cultural coping mechanisms.
