EMDR in conjunction with domestic violence interventions

Domestic violence is a phenomenon that continues to impact our society, affecting women and children. This presentation focuses on the author’s research on risk profiles of domestic offenders. Highlighted within the research is that one of the risk factors confirmed to be correlated with domestic violence is the perpetrator’s history of childhood abuse or having been witness to domestic violence as a child. The risk factor is often viewed to be “static” meaning that it cannot be changed. The presentation will explore how EMDR can be used within psychotherapy to address early childhood trauma in conjunction with traditional partner abuse programs. The goal is to move a “static” risk factor to that which is more “dynamic”, resulting in the reduction of risk posed to women and children liing with domestic violence. A case study will be provided to demonstrate how EMDR enhanced the traditional PARS program. Proposals for the next steps in research will be identified based on the case study.
