Healing spiritual abuse with EMDR: Conceptualization & treatment strategies

Description

Generally defined as the use of God or religion as tools to gain power and control by the abuser, spiritual abuse is one of the most overlooked forms of abuse in clinical settings. The EMDR therapy approach offers powerful solutions for healing spiritual abuse. Spiritually-charged negative cognitions such as “Love is earned,” “I am not deserving of God’s love,” and “I am inherently evil” can be elegantly targeted within the standard EMDR protocol to enhance an individual’s overall recovery process. Case studies using EMDR therapy with spiritual abuse, AIP-informed discussions, and presentation on helping clients cultivate healthy spirituality or spiritual recoveries are all incorporated into this workshop.
