The use of consecutive day EMDR: Case study and discussion

Description

Although EMDR clinicians adhere to prescribed protocols, there is much room when using EMDR treatment for creativity and innovation. The use of consecutive day EMDR is one way to demonstrate this kind of creativity.

This presentation will focus on the use of consecutive day treatment with a client who was dealing with cocaine addiction and serious childhood trauma. In this case, the treatment was done outpatient, with a clinician in private practice. Special accommodations needed to be made in order to proceed with the treatment. The discussion will include how and why these accommodations were made, as well as how to make the clinical decision to do this kind of treatment. Participants will explore how to structure this kind of intervention on an outpatient basis.

The protocols that were used in this particular case will be included: Safe Place, Resource Development, Memory of Addiction (Hase) and the Standard Protocol for trauma. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the case and analyze the viability of this treatment approach. Issues concerning managed care will be included. There is a dearth of information in the literature about consecutive day treatment. Participants will learn about what programs are available for this kind of treatment, including inpatient programs such as the Meadows and Sierra Tucson.

There will be no changes to any established protocols used.
