Die Arbeit mit inneren Anteilen ist in vielen Therapieschulen und -modellen bekannt. Sie belebt und vertieft die Psychotherapie und bereichert das Handwerkszeug der Therapeuten. Als ergänzende und begleitende Behandlung im EMDR-Prozess interessieren besonders die Modelle, die gut mit den Kernannahmen des EMDR vereinbar sind. Das EMDR geht mit dem AIP-Modell von der Existenz neuronaler Netzwerke aus, in denen fortlaufend Informationen gespeichert werden, die unser zukünftiges Handeln strukturieren (Oren & Solomon 2012). Unter Stress oder Belastung werden diese Informationen nicht angemessen verarbeitet. Hierbei handelt es sich um Traumatisierungen, aber auch um belastende Alltagsereignisse, die z. B. mit Ablehnung, Beschämung oder Versagen zu tun haben. Die Information, die solche Ereignisse betrifft, wird isoliert und unverbunden gespeichert und kann jederzeit unwillkürlich aktiviert werden. Schmerzen, Ängste, geringer Selbstwert und andere Symptomatiken sind Folgen und nicht Ursachen der Störungen in der Informationsverarbeitung.
