Carlos was daarna regelmatig ziek en zijn ontwikkeling verliep moeizaam. Hij kreeg twee jaar lang begeleiding van een psycholoog. Hij was vaak boos, moe en verdrietig en hij heeft langere tijd buitenshuis niet willen praten. De grootmoeder had gehoord over EMDR bij preverbaal trauma en vroeg of dit iets voor Carlos zou kunnen zijn. Ze was er van overtuigd dat Carlos was veranderd van vrolijk naar teruggetrokken, na het bezoek in het ziekenhuis. Ze liet het verschil zien aan de hand van foto’s. Via e-mail nam ik de geschiedenis van Carlos nog een keer met zijn moeder door, en we maakten een afspraak voor EMDR. We bereidden per e-mail de sessie voor. Ik vroeg haar het verhaal van te voren zo uit te schrijven, dat ze het tijdens de sessie met zoveel mogelijk beelden zou kunnen vertellen, terwijl Carlos naar haar zou luisteren en tegelijkertijd zijn aandacht zou richten op de klikjes die door een koptelefoon worden aangeboden.
