P14 - A case study: Treatment of prolonged grief disorder with EMDR therapy

Description

Objective:
After loss of a loved one, grief is a normal period, and its negative impacts abate over time. However, long-term grief may decrease life quality. Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is characterized by functional impairment in consequence of intense yearning for the lost person, and depressiveness for at least six months. In the present case study, implementation of EMDR to a patient with PGD will be discussed.

Case:
A female patient came to the clinic with complaints of stomachache, anxiety, and avoidance from social interaction. She told about the death of her sister in a traffic accident, and being witness to it. She said she feels guilty about could not having saved life of her sister. Therefore, EMDR therapy was advised. Two sessions of EMDR is applied on her. In the beginning of the first session, her Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) score was 13, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) score was 17, and Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) score was 70. Immediately before the second EMDR, her declined scores were 6 (BAI), 3 (BDI), and 32 (CAPS). She expressed her anxiousness, stomach aches, and avoidance faded away.

Discussion:
PGD can be treated in a short time with EMDR, which can be effective on various patients with psychological trauma history.
