Using the EMDR recent event protocol with homicide survivors & victims of other violent crimes

Description

Homicide is a stark reality in the United States and claims over 16,500 victims a year. The EMDR Recent Event Protocol is a key tool used in the treatment of victims/survivors and offers a structured and effective way for clients to desensitize and recover from the trauma of the murder of a loved one. The effective use of the Recent Event Protocol will be explored, as it pertains to homicide victims and victims of other violent crimes. This will include a review of the protocol, engagement of the client, assessment, and effective use of a time-limited model of treatment. A case study of successful treatment will be presented, including the use of a simple Visual Assessment Tool (VAT) to help in the assessment and treatment of the client. In addition, innovative affect management tools will be discussed that are effective with survivors. An audiotape of a homicide survivor will be used, with a mini practicum to practice using the Visual Assessment Tool (VAT) and to bring “the voice of the survivor” into the training.
