Efficacy of intervention through EMDR group protocol in reducing trauma in school children

Description

This study is part of the trauma counseling work done in Srinagar, after floods during 2014. Since the target population was large it was decided to implement group protocol of EMDR. With the help of technical support of Dr. Rosalie Thomas and Dr. Ignacio Jarero a 2 days comprehensive Integrative Group Protocol ( EMDR-IGTP) was developed and implemented. The data that is presented here is a part of the large pool of data gathered during the course of intervention work carried out in the field. The participants of this study were 206 school children (91 in Experimental group and 115 in control/wait-listed group). The age range of the participants was between 11yrs to 16 years. Both boys and girls participated in the study. They were studying in co-educational set up and medium of instruction was English. The measure used was short version of Impact of Life Event Scale (ILE8). This test was given to both groups i.e. the experimental and the control/waitlisted group at pre-test and at post test two months after the group intervention. The results show that there was a significant decrease in post test scores of the experimental group compared to the post test scores of the control group while keeping the pre-test scores as co- variate. The results are discussed in terms of its implications for large group trauma counseling work for a country like India that suffers from large scale natural and man- made disasters.
