Dealing with anger issues and emotional difficulties in institutionalized orphan girls using EMDR group protocol

This study reflects on efficacy of EMDR group protocol as an intervention to deal with anger issues and other emotional difficulties of resident girls of an orphanage in India. Dr Ignacio Jarero's Integrative Group Protocol (EMDR-IGTP) was used. The 21 participants were divided into two groups according to the age. Group A consisted of 16 girls within the age range of 11-20 years. ,roup B consisted of 5 girls within the age range of 8-10 years. The measures used were Clinical Anger Scale (CAS) and Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). These tests were given to the group A as pre-test and post-test along with the self-report for qualitative analysis. Group B was evaluated pre-intervention and post-intervention qualitatively using drawings and self-report. Wilcoxon Signed- Ranks Test (Paired) for Group A was calculated. The results show that there was significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores of the group on CAS. However, there was no significant difference between pre-test and post test scores of the group on ERQ. The participants were asked to rate Subjective Unit of Distress after several s·-et (A, B, C and D) of bilateral stimulation. The results were analysed comparing the SUDs at initial stage (point A) with the SUDs at terminal stage (point D) . It was found that out of 16 participants in Group A, in 14 participants (87 .5°/o) the SUDs were reduced to zero from initial stage to terminal stage. In 2 participants (12.5°/o) the SUDs remained Non-zero at the terminal stage. Quanititative and qualitative results are discussed.
