EMDR in VA healthcare: A history and a future

EMDR has been among the most highly recommended evidence-based treatments in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)/Department of Defense (DoD) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Acute Stress Reaction since their first edition in 2004 yet Veterans have continued to encounter inconsistent access to EMDR when seeking VA care. This presentation by the senior policy officer for VA’s national Mental Health Service will provide a perspective on the history of EMDR in the VA healthcare system and describe current efforts to ensure that, whenever a Veteran presents to VA, he or she will get to make an informed, individualized choice of PTSD treatment and that, when it is his/her preference, he/she will be able to access EMDR at any site of VA care.
