Als Alie 12 jaar is, is ze getuige van een ongeluk met haar broer waarbij zijn hand eraf gerukt wordt. Dit is het begin van een opeenstapeling van trauma's en tegenslagen in haar leven. Na een lange en pijnlijke zoektocht waar niemand haar kan helpen en haar gezin ook te lijden heeft onder haar klachten, komt ze erachter dat ze complexe PTSS heeft. Uiteindelijk komt ze in aanraking met een psycholoog die het aandurft om met haar EMDR te gaan doen, een therapie die al snel effect kan hebben. De lezer wordt meegevoerd langs de trauma's zo de spreekkamer van de psycholoog in om de EMDR sessies mee te beleven. Aan het einde van dit autobiografische verhaal is Alie vrij van de PTSS klachten en is de weg vrij voor cognitieve therapie om de schade die aan haar persoonlijkheid is ontstaan te minimaliseren.

When Alie is 12 years old, she is witnessing an accident with her brother in which his hand is ripped off. This is the beginning of an accumulation of traumas and setbacks in her life.
