Trauma capacity building in South East Asia - Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam

South East Asia contains high numbers of traumatised populations from either natural disasters, direct and interpersonal violence. The region also contains a paucity of mental health provision which means addressing the global burden of psychological trauma immensely challenging. For the last 14-years Trauma Aid Germany has been involved extensively in Trauma Capacity Building following the Indian Ocean Tsunami 2004. Countries involved included Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and more latterly Myanmar and Vietnam. Training interventions have focussed upon Trauma-Informed Care, Psychoeducation, Trauma Stabilisation and Empirically-Based Treatments including EMDR Therapy. To date, there have been three Mekong Projects, of which the 3rd is currently operational. Each project has an extensive research and development programme. This presentation will focus upon Country Narratives: Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam proving a contemporaneous review of the current status of trauma capacity building in each country.
