Group EMDR with child survivors of earthquake in Turkey

On August 17, 1999, at 03:02 a.m. an earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale, took place in the northwest part of Turkey, affecting eight big cities in the region, namely İstanbul, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Yalova, Bursa, Bolu, Zonguldak and Eskişehir. The earthquake took place in a very densely inhabited part of our country where many industrial centers were established, causing the human and material losses to be very high. The statistics indicate that about 16 million people got directly or indirectly affected by the earthquake. More than 20,000 people were killed, more than 25,000 people were wounded and about 140,000 families were left homeless in the disaster, i.e. 750,000 people were left homeless. At the time being, 170,000 people live in prefabricated homes; the rest of the earthquake victims started to live with their families of origin in the villages of Anatolia ( http://www.deprem.gov.tr/rapor/).
