EMDR: Trauma therapy
Description
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing or EMDR treatment is a form of therapy helping people work through trauma. The treatment involving sight, sound and touch is described by some patients as a miracle. "It made it so going outside is a lot easier," North said. Clinical therapist Larry Ling uses a light bar with left to right moving lights to guide eye movements, sometimes incorporating hand vibrations and sound, to help you put your guard down. "The idea behind the eye movements is that, because you engage both hemispheres of the brain, left and right, quickly, that you can't hold your defenses up anymore and so you fully process it," Ling said. After about 15 to 20 seconds of the eye movement, Ling says he asks patients to talk about their traumatic experience.
