The eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy model of self-care for clients was developed by González and Mosquera to describe an optimal way for clients to take care of themselves in different areas of functioning. EMDR therapy self-care protocol is intended as an adjunct to therapeutic treatments including other types of interventions. By using this protocol, the authors attempt to structure the intervention in the beginning of treatment, or parallel to treatment. Good self-care is useful and necessary for improving clients' strengths as well as ensuring optimal development and a more successful treatment. The EMDR self-care protocol is recommended whenever some of the following indicators of deficient self-care patterns exist: little understanding of the relevance of self-care; lack of compliance with prescribed medication; unhealthy lifestyle habits; substance abuse; self-harm; and previous suicide attempts. This chapter explains the work that helps clients relate to themselves in a more compassionate way by learning a completely new method of looking at themselves with acceptance, comprehension, and care. This type of work helps repair attachment wounds and introduces new adaptive information that client's lack, which is a great preparation for future processing of traumatic events.
