Bei sexuellem Missbrauch spricht man von sequentieller Traumatisierung (Keilson, 1979), wenn diese Gewalterfahrung nur das erste Glied einer Kette traumatischer Ereignisse bildet. EMDR kann diese Kette fortsetzen oder unterbrechen. Unangemessen eingesetzt, kann EMDR ein Kind retraumatisieren. Einem anderen gegenüber bedeutet es unterlassene Hilfeleistung, ihm dieselbe Methode vorzuenthalten.
In the case of sexual abuse, it is called sequential traumatization (Keilson, 1979), when this experience of violence is only the first link in a chain of traumatic events.
