EMDR in trauma and bereavement consequent to target killing

Objective:
Study the use and unique features of EMDR therapy in clinical outcomes of complex trauma caused by target killing in a persecuted community. Study design: Descriptive study. Place of study: BIPBS, Quetta, Baluchistan Pakistan.
Methodology:
The impact of a complex trauma consequent to target killing in a surviving member of the constantly-under-threat Hazara community is described using clinical interviews video recorded and audio-taped EMDR sessions. The transcript was analysed using qualitative method.
Results:
Target killing results in a mix of bereavement and PTSD symptoms with each worsening the other. The challenges demand modifications in virtually all the eight stages of therapy. The resistance shown in SUDs and VoC, and the use of cultural and spiritual cognitive interweaves for full social and occupational functioning are highlighted.
Conclusion:
EMDR therapy needs to be supplemented through cultural grief work techniques for complete clinical recovery in complex trauma consequent to target killing.
