How licensed EMDR and EFT clinicians integrate both models in couple therapy: A thematic analysis

In this thematic analysis (TA) study, I explored how licensed therapists who are dually trained in Emotionally focused Therapy (EFT) and EMDR (most of which were certified in EMDR by EMDRIA) integrate both therapies in couple therapy. Qualitative interviews with thirteen eligible clinicians were conducted. In the interviews, participants described how and why they integrate these two models, and what they believed makes it clinically effective. They discussed their strategies and motives for combining the models, and also reviewed the pitfalls, complexities, and risks of integration. Seven themes emerged in the data. The first, most salient and frequently mentioned theme (including seven subthemes) was that EFT and EMDR complement each other well in couple therapy. The second (including ten subthemes) was that integrating both models benefits couples. The third (including seven subthemes) reviews several variables germane to effective integration of both models in couple therapy. The fourth (including six subthemes) reviewed the clinical risks of integrating. The fifth covered the penchant for participants to mention integrating other models as well into their clinical work with couples. The sixth was integrating EMDR at any of the three stages of EFT couple therapy. The seventh and last was that integration is more the exception than the rule. After the discussion, I conclude by reviewing the clinical implications and limitations of the findings, not only for the field of MFT and the treatment of emotional and psychological trauma, but the broader psychotherapy community as well.
