A motivational book for ED patients and their therapists

Description

Background and aims
The psychoeducational phase in EMDR therapy is important because detailed information is provided to the patients concerning the possible causes of their functioning. This information can help patients understand the origin of their dysfunctional behavior. A further goal of the psychoeducational phase is to increase treatment motivation, by informing the patient that problems can be solved only through active application and participation in the treatment. The first step to overcome a problem is to recognize it and get to know it. People who is suffering from an eating disorder usually have a low motivation to treat their condition. This book contains special charts to help people to improve their motivation. The self-help cards were created with the aim of: - Helping the patient to recognize first symptoms of an eating disorder - Enhancing the patient’s awareness about dysfunctional behavior - Increasing treatment motivation - Providing support to EMDR psychotherapy

Method
This cards can help people to identify issues concerning their own eating behavior and to find new solutions, such as EMDR psychotherapy. Each card has a specific theme: - Self-acceptance resources - Recognize the emotions - Negative memories - New coping strategies - Mindfulness exercises

Results and conclusion
People who fill in the self- help cards would be more aware about multiple factors involved in eating disorders and would have more motivation to understand and to treat them. Therefore, this cards used in EMDR therapy could increase the knowledge of eating behavior and could raise motivation to change and to prevent these patients’ typical dropout.
