Mapping 25 Years of EMDR research by bibliometric analysis

Description

Background
Since its introduction in early 1990s, EMDR has become established as one of the leading evidence-based treatments for PTSD and other trauma-related conditions. The growing body of research explores its applicability and effectiveness across a wide range of disorders. The objective of the study was to apply methods of bibliometric analysis to map the development and current status of EMDR research. Specifically, number of publications and citations, author productivity, key topics, and patterns of international collaboration were explored.

Methods
Bibliometric data for publications containing the abbreviation “EMDR” in the title, abstract, or author keywords was obtained from Web of Science. Articles and reviews in academic journals (excluding early access entries) published between 1994 and 2019, were included. The extracted records were analyzed on a range of bibliometric characteristics using VOSviewer v. 1.6.13 software [1].

Results
Overall, 853 publications were retrieved. Average number of citations per item was 20.35 (total number of citations = 17,362). The number of research publications and citations showed a steady upward growth (Figure 1). Nine clusters of top 88 keywords were identified (Figure 2), as well as key international centers of research (Figure 3).

Conclusions
Research on EMDR is rapidly developing and is diverse in terms of addressed topics and geographical representation.
