Emotional stabilization by EMDR after traumatic delivery. Pilot study

Description

Introduction
EMDR therapy is successfully applied in treatment of posttraumatic stress disorders (Shapiro, 1989). Some recent researches provide promising results in pregnancy and post-partum anxiety treatment (Zolghar et al., 2019, Zimmerman, 2017, Chiorino et al, 2016, Baas et al., 2019). The delivery experience is painful and can damage psychological well-being of woman and her relationships with others, especially with the newborn. Each delivery is a stressful situation at least for the woman and her newborn. We use the term of “traumatic” delivery when the delivery is described in this way by the patient or when the accompanying staff is noticing some signs of traumatic stress that impede the patient to overcome the delivery experience and to build relationships with the baby, her environment or with her-self.

Aim
Using the first phase of EMDR procedure to pacify emotional state of women after a traumatic delivery experience Method: We used self-reporting as criterion of inclusion as well as criterion of efficacy of our intervention. Each woman was treated with EMDR therapy (first phase). The treatment was provided according to the request of help from each woman or accompanying staff.

Sample
Women passed through traumatic delivery. N=15. 11 of patients were treated immediately after the delivery, 4 were seen some months later after the delivery.

Results
According to self-reporting all the women improved their psychological well-being.

Perspectives
New research project is under construction. We plan to compare the emotional well-being between two groups of women treated with and without EMDR therapy after traumatic delivery.
