SOFTER: Prevention of post traumatic stress disorder and post concussional stress syndrome in emergency room with a single EMDR session

Description

Background and aims
We will present SOFTER study, a multicenter randomized controlled study. Studies show that 20% of patients who come to the emergency room after a stressful event will suffer from various aspecific symptoms, affecting their quality of life and which can be grouped under the term post concussion syndrome - like (PCLS).

Methods
Previous studies suggested that these disorders can be induced by the stress experienced during the emergency room stay and during a pilot study, SOFTER 2 we could see that these disorders can be prevented with a single session of EMDR. Softer 3 compared the impact of early EMDR intervention within 3 months and the current treatment of emergency patients on the occurrence of PCLS and PTSD.

Results
Centric muliti randomized controlled study. While the results of SOFTER 2 showed us a significant drop in the rate of PCLS and PTSD those of SOFTER 3 do not reveal the same conclusion. Among patients admitted to the ER, a single EMDR session did not reduce the incidence of PCLS, particularly among patients who reported high stress at admission. We noticed that the level of training of EMDR therapists impacted the results of the study.

Conclusion
We will obtain more data during the national SOFTER 4 PHRC (hospital clinical research program), multicentre study in 5 French hospitals on 5000 patients in order to prevent PTSD and PCLS.
