EMDR and diabetes mellitus: A service to improve quality of life and adherence

Description

EMDR can be used to help process traumatic events linked to diabetes mellitus (DM) and to improve regimen adherence and quality of life. We present the EMDR and DM service for AGAD (Young Diabetics’ Association) at San Matteo hospital in Pavia.

Goal
Assess the correlations between early traumas and DM onset; and between group EMDR and improvement in regimen adherence and quality of life.

Method
Type I and II diabetes patients complete the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACEs) questionnaire on registration with the service. DM II patients are currently undergoing group EMDR treatment focusing on problem areas associated with the disease. Following this, DM I and II patients will complete questionnaires to assay improvement in regime adherence and quality of life.

Expected Results
positive correlation between childhood traumas and DM I and II. Improvement in regimen adherence and quality of life of DM II patients after group EMDR.

Conclusions
The EMDR and DM service was designed to support medical and dietological treatment of DM. Gathering ACE data on diabetic patients in Italy will contribute to a future model of prevention based on psychological wellbeing. EMDR can be used to process traumatic events will lead to an improvement in patients’ quality of life and regime adherence.
