EMDR treatment of fibromyalgia

Background
Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disease clustered as one of the medically unexplained symptoms that affects the daily life of people seriously according to the American College of Rheumatology. Depression and anxiety are highly comorbid with this chronic pain.
Aim
The multi-centred Randomized Controlled Study examined the effectiveness of the EMDR Fibromyalgia Protocol on fibromyalgia pain, depression, trauma symptoms, and quality of sleep of adults diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
Methods
Experimental group (N=34) received EMDR Fibromyalgia Protocol and Control Group (N=26) received only Treatment as Usual. 60 participants completed pre, post and follow up test measures of the Beck Depression Scale, Visual Analog Scale, Trauma Symptom Checklist-40, Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index and the Widespread Pain Index.
Results
2 (experimental group, control group) x 3 (pre, post, follow up) factor ANOVA results indicate that there is significant difference between group x time scores of Beck Depression Inventory (F(5;310)=11,318; p<.001), Visual Analog Scale (F(5;310)=5,061; p<.001), Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (F(5;310)=2,254; p<.05), Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (F(5;310)=11,163; p<.001), Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (F(5; 310)=8,596; p<.001) and Widespread Pain Index (F(5;310)= 13,901; p<.001).
