Online EMDR therapy in the COVID-19 era and beyond

Description

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven not to be no only a life threatening global event, but also one that has had a major psychological impact on millions of people around the world.  The fact that many individuals experienced anxietty, loneliness, depression, and post-traumatic symptoms, led to a greater need for psychological services.  Demand for therapeutic support increased, yet at the same time, the feasibility of meeting clients in-person dropped drastically.  For this reason, many therapists began offering psychotherapy online.  One group facing this challenge was that of therapists practicing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.  This chapter will introduce the reader to EMDR Therapy and the Adaptive Information Processing Model.  It will review the literature regarding the current provision of online therapy and make clinical recommendations for its use.
