Trauma informed practice: Creating healing systems

Description

Trauma theory and its application has grown significantly over the past 20 years thanks to new technologies and new knowledge. Trauma Informed Practice extends theory beyond medical models to include biopsychosocial and holistic approaches focused on recovery and healing over whole systems, not just individuals. Trauma Informed Practice provides a potent adjunct to EMDR and trauma integration. These safe environments improve client outcomes and protect those working in the helping profession. Whilst Trauma Informed Practice is well known in public and NGO settings and a widely used term, there is still a way to go. Mental health practitioners working in private or organisational settings are well placed to apply trauma theory across services. They already have a deep understanding of trauma, its impact, and compassion for the symptoms and behaviours that once served to protect. This presentation focuses on ways we can create safe, healing environments in our places of work that allow whole systems to mobilise and support recovery from trauma. It will provide an overview of ways to implement trauma informed practice across individual, organisation, and community systems.
