EMDR research: Current activities and scientific developments
Description
Background and aims
Several years ago, a network of international scientists came together to strengthen the scientific evidence on the effects and efficacy of Eye-Movement-Desensitization-and-Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. The overarching goals of this network are to form cross-site teams to conduct prioritized research, identify relevant research evidence gaps, and derive concepts, make recommendations regarding future EMDR therapy research and how to conduct high quality research to be included in international evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, and ensure that the international treatment guidelines committees are aware of and have access to relevant EMDR studies.
Methods
Developing standards and practical tools to improve the quality of EMDR-research and conducting scientific research.
Results
This symposium will focus on current developments in the field of EMDR research. First, practical research tools and the role of EMDR in current guidelines for the treatment of PTSD will be presented. While EMDR in the treatment of PTSD has now become an integral part of most guidelines, its use is no longer limited to therapy for PTSD. Current scientific developments on the use of EMDR in the treatment of personality disorders, depression, pain, and on the underlying mechanisms of action will be given.
Conclusions
Current developments in the field of EMDR research will be discussed and possible directions for future research will be addressed.
