Transformative procedures to accelerate healing in EMDR processing
Description
Background and aims
The Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP) predicts that EMDR processing will mostly run smoothly because of the existence of adaptive memory networks and the linking up of new associations which facilitate change on the level of the traumatic memory and maladaptive themes. However, there are circumstances which require more precise and growth-promoting interventions to facilitate healing. These include processing with fragile clients, some extraordinary/overwhelming events, or ongoing episodes which are “theme-loaded”. In this presentation, we provide a treasure chest of procedures and interventions which are included in our E-TEP (Expanded Traumatic Episode/Event) Protocol, also known as the “Sandwich”, for promoting healing.
We will introduce (1) The Resource Connection Envelope (RCE)
Methods as a gateway for retrieving unconscious unique transformative resources; (2) A transformative PC (TPC) which facilitates attainment of a transformed theme for the self; (3) Growth-promoting interweaves: relational, somatic and dialectical; (4)"Back-To-Base” strategies, utulizing the EMD-EMDR continuum, providing process-focused interventions.
Results
These procedures and interventions ensure higher transformative processes through a deeper connection to lifelong themes related to the higher self, resources, the therapeutic relationship, and somatic-based discharge, all which ultimately facilitate EMDR processing.
Conclusions
Multiple procedures greatly aid the facilitation of transformative processes in EMDR therapy and should thus be utilized.
