Blended therapy modalities in equine-assisted psychotherapy: integrating equine-engaged internal family systems (EE-IFS) and equine-connected eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EC-EMDR)

Description

Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are clinical applications to Natural Lifemanship’s Trauma-Focused Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (TF-EAP). This chapter provides an overview of both models and guides the licensed clinician in understanding the integration process. Focused attention is given to Natural Lifemanship’s principles and their expression in session, illustrated by case studies. Equine-Engaged-Internal Family Systems (EE-IFS: “Equid-Nexus™”) and Equine-Connected Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EC-EMDR) are introduced as specific models in EAP services. The role and benefits to the horse are highlighted, and the importance of a connected therapy team and investing in ongoing personal work. Resources, guidance and assessment questions are included to assist those interested in learning more and/or increasing competency in delivering quality, evidenced-based trauma-focused care.
