Description

This chapter discusses the beneficial opportunities, potential risks and other implications within group intervention from the perspective of social psychology and cultural awareness. Group interventions are not only beneficial because of the efficient ways in which they extend resources by reducing practitioner to participant ratios, they have unique aspects that can maximize therapeutic value. Indeed, because of the power of group connection, group interventions can be a treatment of choice over individual psychotherapy. Understanding the social and cultural dimensions of human nature is essential in designing and conducting group treatment. The first part of this chapter will highlight relevant aspects of social psychology and the second section will integrate information and recommendations from best practices in cultural competence within Group EMDR Therapy. Two self-evaluation tools are provided to assist practitioners in designing and implementing groups with methods that will maximize a positive group experience that is inclusive and empowering for all participants.
