Description

A purple hat therapy is defined as an “intervention that combines evidence-based treatment components with a new component of questionable scientific plausibility.” This chapter describes approaches that appear to fit this definition. For example, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) combines an evidence-based approach (i.e., exposure therapy) with a questionable component (i.e., eye movements). Other treatments discussed in the chapter include energy therapies and binaural sleep sounds. The chapter closes by identifying common features of purple hat therapies.
