Description

Although definitions of coaching vary, most involve a collaborative relationship between coach and coachee with the goal of achieving professional or personal development outcomes that are evaluated by the coachee (Spence & Grant, 2007). Typically, coaching goals are set in order to develop an individual's capabilities or current performance. In essence, the coaching process facilitates goal achievement by helping individuals to: identify desired outcomes; establish specific goals; enhance motivation by identifying strengths and enhancing self-efficacy; identify resources and formulate specific action plans; monitor and evaluate progress toward goals; and modify action plans based on feedback (Grant, Passmore, Cavananagh, & Parker, 2010). In comparison with psychotherapy, there are several important differences that we will partially discuss. The bond between therapist and patient is an asymmetrical relationship. Indeed, most often, the therapist is supposed to have the answers whereas in coaching, the coach helps the client discover their own answers in a relationship of equality and a creative partnership. The therapist is generally interested in the past that led to the dysfunctional situation while the coach is interested in the present and looking for how to move towards a more pleasant future...establish specific goals; enhance motivation by identifying strengths and enhancing self-efficacy; identify resources and formulate specific action plans; monitor and evaluate progress toward goals; and modify action plans based on feedback (Grant, Passmore, Cavananagh, & Parker, 2010).
